Youth Mental Health First Aid
who is it for?
This course is for adults working or living with young people. The course is mainly focused on assisting young people between 12 and 18 years old and can also be relevant for helping young adults. Any interested adult can attend, however this course is particularly suitable for parents, teachers, sports coaches, and youth workers.
Participants are eligible to complete an online accreditation assessment in order to receive Mental Health First Aider Accreditation valid for 3 years.

What is covered?
The course teaches adults how to assist young people who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis by using the MHFA Action Plan. Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of developing mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Developing mental health problems covered in this course are:
- Substance use problems
- Eating disorders
Mental health crisis situations covered in this course are:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called self-harm)
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
- Severe psychotic states
- Aggressive behaviours
What is the Format?
This is a 14 hour course, which can be delivered over either:
- 2 days (7 hours each day), or
- 4 sessions (3.5 hours each session)
what can meeting minds provide?
Meeting Minds will faciltate the course at your place of work or nominated location and bring all necessary training equipment and materials. Course participants receive a YMHFA action plan wallet card, YMHFA manual and Certificate of Completion.
